It's one of laundry's most common questions, and the honest answer is: they do completely different things.
How dryer sheets work#
A dryer sheet is a piece of nonwoven fabric coated in softening agents and fragrance. Heat releases the coating, which transfers onto your clothes. That coating is what makes fabric feel silky and smell like "mountain breeze."
The catch: that same coating builds up over time. On towels, it creates a waxy film that kills absorbency — if your towels smell fine but don't dry you well anymore, dryer sheets are the likely culprit. The residue also coats your dryer's moisture sensor, which can make auto-dry cycles run long. And athletic wear should never see a dryer sheet: the coating clogs the moisture-wicking channels that make performance fabric work.
How wool dryer balls work#
Dryer balls are purely mechanical. They tumble between garments, separating layers so hot air circulates better, and gently agitate fibers to soften them. No coating, no residue, no fragrance.
Benefits: faster drying (often 10–25% on medium loads), reduced static when used correctly, safe for towels, athletic wear, baby clothes, and sensitive skin. A set lasts for roughly a thousand loads, so the cost per load rounds to zero.
The catch: they don't add fragrance, and their static reduction depends on not over-drying. If you love that dryer-sheet scent, wool balls will feel like something's missing. (Workaround: a drop or two of essential oil on the ball, added at the end of the cycle.)

One more static tip#
Most static comes from over-drying, not from skipping sheets. Pull loads while barely warm and slightly cooler than bone-dry, and static mostly disappears on its own — regardless of what's tumbling with your clothes.
